In Case You Were Wondering...

What I did this past weekend...

Did I attend this, you ask? You could say that...

The Hubby and I had the honor of being two of the 30 singers on stage in the choir performing at Video Games Live on January 24th here in Seattle. Video Games Live is a touring show, it's been going for a few years now, and they played at the Paramount Theatre this past Saturday, to a completely sold out house. Basically the premise is that it's the music from Video Games from all the way from Pong to Halo 3 (which the trailer for the game premiered at this performance), in a multi-media concert setting, with a symphonic orchestra, a small choir and some soloists.

It was a BLAST, just wild and since I'm not into the gamer scene, I had absolutely no idea what to expect. Let's just put it this way: I just tried to soak it all in, it was like being a rock star for an evening. I have never had people SCREAM, and I mean 3,000 people SCREAMING when you start singing. It was like nothing I've ever experienced, it was incredible.

It's really interesting for me to watch the videos of it from the audience perspective, as a singer on stage, it was really tough to hear, you can basically hear your little segment of what's going on, and you definitely don't hear the bulk of the effects and synth stuff going out into the house. And while you can see all the lights swirling around you and all while you're on stage, you get very little sense of how it comes across to the audience. Now that I'm watching it, I think it looks really cool, if you ask me. Also, I think we (the choir)sound pretty effing awesome, so I'm really proud of that.

The Hubs was chosen for a HUGE solo during the segment for the game Civilization, which, by the way, was in Swahili of all frickin' languages, and not the easiest solo to execute in general. Well, the hubs totally kicked ASS at it, I was so proud of him. And to have only a couple of days to learn it, it was pretty impressive, if you ask me. Yeah, yeah, I'm biased, but I was very proud. I can't find any video of it, though, which is really disappointing. But here are a few more videos from the show. Sorry some of the quality is crap, but people were recording it with their phones and stuff, so WYSIWYG.

This guy is a piano player named Martin Leung, who seriously blew me away. In the choir, were all also cheering for him, in the two segments that he played for. This is him playing the Super Mario Bros. theme blindfolded. Yeah, that's pretty bad ass.

So, here is how this went for us. I got word of the gig about a week before. We got our music on the Tuesday before we performed (3 days prior), we then had two rehearsals during the week, and then we showed up at the theatre at about 1 pm on Saturday. We rehearsed from about 1:45 until 5, on and off with the orchestra and we got our marching orders from the conductor, Jack Wall for all staging issues.

Jack was the nicest guy, totally chill about the whole thing, he just wanted us to go out, sing our hearts out and have a really good time, showing lot's of energy for the audience. We knew the music pretty well by that point, so we knew that basically our jobs were to go on stage and perform our little hearts out.

It really was an incredibly good time, and SUCH a fun show to do. Bottom line, I know that the Hubs and I would JUMP at performing this show again. Maybe someday...

That is so far beyond cool it has no word. Wow.

I saw a symphony perform cartoon themes ("The Merry-Go-Round Broke Down", incidental music to Warner Bros. & MGM toons, etc.) and it was an absolute friggin' blast. This appears to have been similar and then some. Great fun stuff.
