The Things We Do.
Ronin, my blog's namesake has been having some troubles lately. Namely with his eyes. We noticed at the end of August that his one of his eyes looked a little odd, but it didn't seem bad, so we took a cautious "wait and see" attitude. A couple of weeks later, it was looking considerably worse so we made an appointment with the vet. Keep in mind that this degeneration happened really fast.
The vet looks at him says "he's blind in his right eye" and says that we have to take him to the animal eye specialist. Yes, that's right. The cat eye doctor. My joke was that he was going to hold that big thing that the do eyeglass prescriptions with in front of the cat and ask him: "number one or number two, number one or number two, number three or number four, number three or number four."
So we take Ronin to the eye doctor, and that seven minute consultation/diagnosis/whatever cost us $500 dollars. Of course, out of pocket. FIVE HUNDRED DOLLARS. The cat eye doctor didn't think he was blind, btw, but his eyes (both of them, one just to a much lower degree) were swollen/bulging. Now, swollen eyes, eyes that have too much fluid in them are generally bad, and can eventually cause permanent damage to the eye. The only thing that didn't make me feel like a terribly Mommy to my little boy is both the vet and the cat eye doctor said that there really was nothing at all that we could have done to stop this, and it wasn't caused by anything that WE did. Thank God.
The cat eye doctor wanted us to bring him in again a month later. That day was today. The appointment was five minutes and cost us $100. That's $20 a minute, by the way. The good thing is that Ronin's eyes are looking considerably better, and he's definitely not blind in his right eye. He has some damage, but nothing terrible. The bad thing is that we have to bring him back in another month. Guh.
Honestly though, and I think this goes without saying, I would have paid this regardless, I only complain because it's my blog. But truly, I am just thrilled that my little boy is okay, and especially that he's not going to go blind. Still, $20 a minute basically. Jesus.

Glad to see that Ronin is doing better.
At $20/minute, clearly I am in the wrong business!
